What WikiReader stores
Without an account
WikiReader works fully without signing in. Your reading history, trail, saved articles, reading lists, highlights, notes, and settings are stored only on your device. Recommendations on the Today page are worked out on your device from that history. Reading stats, such as time spent reading, words read, and Focus speed, are also worked out and stored on your device, and you can pause or clear them in the app. To sort articles into topics for those stats, the app sends the titles of articles you read to Wikipedia’s topic service, run by the Wikimedia Foundation. Your advertising consent choices and verified ad-free status are also stored locally. Articles and images are loaded directly from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, which receive ordinary web requests as with any browser. Their privacy policy is at foundation.wikimedia.org.
With an account
Signing in is optional. If you sign in, we store:
- Your email address, and your name if your sign-in provider shares it.
- An identifier from Google or Apple if you sign in with them.
- Your synced library: saved articles, reading lists, highlights and notes, your reading trail and progress, articles you marked “Not interested”, your reading settings, and your reading stats (daily reading time, words read, and Focus speed).
- Sign-in sessions, so you stay signed in.
This data is used only to sign you in and to keep your library the same across your devices. It is not sold, not used for advertising, and not shared with anyone except the services that run WikiReader: Amazon Web Services (storage), Vercel (hosting), and our email provider for sign-in codes.
Advertising and Remove Ads
The free app can show Google AdMob ads after completed articles. Ads never appear inside an article. Google may process device identifiers, IP address, approximate location, ad interactions, and diagnostic information to provide, limit, personalize, and measure ads. Where required, the app asks for consent before requesting ads and provides Privacy Choices from the Account screen. See the Google Privacy Policy.
We do not send your WikiReader account, reading history, reading stats, trail, saved articles, lists, highlights, notes, or on-device recommendations to AdMob. A one-time Remove Ads purchase is handled by Apple or Google. Purchase evidence is sent to our verification service only to confirm the permanent entitlement and is not retained after the request. Apple or Google keeps the purchase associated with your store account under its own privacy policy.
Sign-in with Google or Apple
We request only your basic profile and email address. We do not access your contacts, files, or any other Google or Apple data.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time from the Account screen in the app. This permanently removes your account and synced library from our servers. Data stored only on your device stays there until you remove the app.
